PROJECT: Storehouse No. 7, Bates Mill
Complex
LOCATION: Lewiston, Maine
CLIENT: Peoples Heritage Bank
SERVICES: Architect - Engineer - Construction Manager
The renovation of Storehouse No. 7 was
the first major project in the ongoing redevelopment of the historic Bates Mill Complex in
Lewiston, Maine. It is an example of the adaptive reuse projects for which Platz
Associates is known. Built in 1870 as a storehouse for raw cotton, this 48,000 square foot
building was converted for use as an operations center for Peoples Heritage Bank
The challenge of this project was to create a
state-of-the-art facility for the 300 employees who would work here while maintaining the
historic character of the building. Exterior renovations included masonry restoration; new
windows, and a new main facade and entrance that compliment the historic scale of this and
the surrounding mill buildings.
To upgrade the interior,
structural repairs were first completed and then the brick walls and heavy timber framing
members were sandblasted with walnut shells (to reduce abrasion), revealing the natural
hues of the materials. The result is a look and feel that can only be obtained in a
building as unique as those of an old New England mill. Other interior improvements
include stair towers, elevators, updated electrical and mechanical systems, and space
layout to meet Peoples needs.
Peoples
Heritage Bank is so pleased with its space in the Bates Mill that it has agreed to lease
an additional 68,000 square feet in the complex.
