Built by the City of Lewiston to support investment in downtown Lewiston’s Southern Gateway, the 375 car Southern Gateway Parking Garage was designed to serve the immediate parking needs of Oxford Networks, Northeast Bank, Andover College and the Public Theatre, as well as additional economic growth in the gateway. In designing the Southern Gateway Garage, Platz Associates sought to keep the garage transparent, open and well lit. Safety was one of the key design considerations, with the interior of stair towers incorporating glass and visible from outside of the structure.

Aesthetics were another important design consideration. Being a fairly large structure, a special effort was made to design a building that adds to the streetscape rather than detract from it. Important consideration was made to draw from adjacent buildings and give the appearance of being similar in scale that would complement rather than overpower the surrounding buildings. To meet this goal, the facade of the garage along Lisbon Street has varied roof lines, and incorporates glass, brick, copper, and metal grillwork.
